the initiator of the work does not necessarily own the forge - tho he must be a competent craftsman - because within these small, tightly knit kin-units, equipment, tho technically owned individually, is communally used, and a man always has the right to claim the forge of his patri-cousin, father's brother, etc., as well as his labor 
thus tho the composition of the elemental work group stays fairly constant, organizational leadership shifts easily among the full craftsmen who belong to it the whole procidure is group-centered, and the workers are referred to not as a family, which is what they really are, but as a 'seka'
[Geertz defines seka as "a social group, formed on the basis of a single and exclusive criterion of membership, and dedicated to a particular and usually rather narrowly specified social end, religious, political, economic or whatever; membership in some seka is ascribed, in others it is more or less voluntry; some seka permanent and others temporary; all members of a seka have equal rights and duties, alto usually one or more hereditary or popularly chosen leaders; every Balinese belongs to from 3 or 4 up to nearly a dozen of these groups]
the making of the large gongs, on the other hand, can only take place under the direction of an experienced master craftsman - for the technical requirements involved are much more exacting and errors in judgement much more serious - and in a much large forge usually almost all anstrument makers in a kin group are invited to participate in such a job and are again morally obliged to do so the initiator usually supplies an elaborate midday meal over and above the monetary payments involved, so that the making of a large gong, while will take place only every month or two in the best of times, takes on, for all the backbreaking labor involved, the air of a family festival but because of the heavy labor requirements, it is only the larger kin-groups who can engage in this activity in the first place in Tihingan only the three largest of the 12 kin groups in the hamlet, containing 47, 26 and 25 households respectively, possess large forges and count master craftsmen among their members, the other forty households having only a few ordinary craftsmen and a few fitfully operated small forges for minor repair work 83% per cent of the skilled instrument workers, i.e. master and ordinary craftsmen, and 84% of the forges belond to the 3 largest kin groups, which comprise only 68% of the population.
It is the mobilization of an extensive kin group for cooperative endeavor which makes the very lucrative production of the large gongs possible, and as this mobilization further strengthens kin ties the relationship is a mutually reinforcing one again, although only a master craftsman has the necessary skills to direct large gong-making effectively, and ordinary craftsman in the kin-group seka may contract such a job and organize such a work-party, 'borrowing' (with appropriate recompense, of course)both the master craftsman and his forge for the purpose, and calling on kinsmen for the necessary skilled and unskilled labor,
