Notes Relating to Blacksmithing and Other Metalworking Industries, from 1989 BRI Field Trip to Bali1.
1. from interview with Pande Nyoman Buaka. blacksmith from Kerambitan (Tabanan)

Note: I did not attend entire interview; more information on this informant in booklet (see #2 below)
Pande Nyoman uses areng made from bamboo; he is the only pande in his village
his father also works as a pande, but apparently lives in another village
Pande Nyoman has a hand-turned rotary bellows (ubub putar tangan) which he made himself for 50,000 Rp in 1986
if he had bought it, it would have cost 175,000 Rp
formerly they used traditional double piston bellows, but now both he and his father use a rotary bellow
uses a nail-shaped anvil; is flat on the top, but nonetheless rather lingum-shaped because swells out below the top
has 2 grinda listrik, one in working order and one not in working order
batunya (grindstone?) must be replaced on the grinda every 15 days as a cost of 1100 Rp
also uses files; they also last 15 days each and then must be (sold for) scrap
he not only makes tools, but also repairs them and makes (carves) wooden handles for tools
he sells 40 kg worth of cuttings a year at 100 Rp a kg.
does not sell his filings
uses one hired worker whom he pays 2500 Rp a day; works 25 days a mo.
Pande Nyoman's production is up because of the grinda - filing slowed him down before
workplace also called 'perapen' here

2. from booklet Pande Nyoman Buaka [[note]] booklet? [[/note]]

(booklet filled out by Bernandus)

his perapen measures 4 x 5 meters and he built it in 1988 at a cost of 200,000 Rp
uses bamboo charcoal
buys some charcoal, but also makes some from bamboo
if makes, uses 25,000 worth of bamboo, which produces 20 kampil areng @ 30 kg.
to make areng need 3 workers, who must be paid 3000 Rp a day plus 500 Rp a day for food; they work from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm to make a batch
1 kampil of areng lasts 3 days, so would only have to do this
