problems in getting charcoal in rainy season can cause Pande M.T. to stop working for a day also takes about 30 days off a year for holidays and ceremonies otherwise works every day throughout the year
types of products made include pisau, pahat, gunting, gunting perak, and various types of agricultural tools such as cangkul and arit sells directly to customers or to traders who come to perapen; thus he never has to go sit in the market
he buys iron once a month, about 28 kilos at 1000 Rp a kilo
he buys 10,000 Rp worth of areng every 3 days (25 X 400 Rp)
buys 4 files every 3 months, each costing 3300 Rp spends 5000 Rp a mo. for electricity and 5000 for transport in a month makes about 56 gunting perak and 56 gunting biasa which sell for 10,000 Rp each; this accounts for 75% of his sales total ave. monthly sales (before expenses) in 1990 were 1,494,490 Rp
he uses besi proyek and besi baja bought from trader (traders?) in Gianyar; the trader is a 'pedagang perantara'; sometimes he must go to Denpasar to get iron because there are no stocks in Gianyar, but the price in Denpasar is 100 Rp a kilo more
Cut (my BRI fieldworker who filled out this booklet) says that iron accounts for only 18.2% of his total expenditures
buys arang in Pasar Sukawati, also from a 'pedagang perantara'; difficult to get in rainy season and price goes up 50 Rp per kilo use arang and (from?) bamboo as fuel
has electricity in workplace and uses to operate filing machine he normally has no transport costs because suppliers and buyers come to him
he uses only family labor and never hired
his total expenditures per month are 25,200 for iron, 98,885 for charcoal (more expensive than the iron), 4,400 for files(sic), 5000 for electr., 5000 for transport and nothing for hired labor
totals 138,485, acc. to Cut
profit thus 1,356,000 per month (about $700, or not too bad for such a small operation)
in addition family earns about 90,000 a mo from Puspa's hospital work, 112,000 a mo. profit from sale of snacks, and 37,500 a mo. for share-cropping out their sawah
thus total household income from all sources about 1,595,505($825), while Puspa estimates their monthly expenditures at only 267,500 Rp; thus 1,328,005 available to save
savings chart shows savings sometimes taken out to use on ceremonies(upacara), house improvements, school fees and consumer goods like tape recorders
chart of ave. labor hours per mo. in the perapen shows that Pande M.T. puts in 195 hours a mo. (about 7 hours a day)
Puspa and youngest brother put in 56 hours each and brother between tem puts in 20
