Dear Doris,

Well another gloomy cold new day. I have been down street & stopped to Alices they sat up to hear the returns as they came in till after one o'clock. & the Toomeys had their wake. I went down to post the letter & came around that way & ran in for a little while to see Gene & Doris they were taking it pretty hard, but were calm to all appearances. they said it was so sudden & I told them it was their loss but his gain & it was the right way to go. Arthurs was a lingering death. they both inquired after him. Mary was smiling around there seemed to be enjoying the entertainment. people were going & coming all the evening. the house was lighted all night I presume it was a social event all around. liquor drank dont you think? she was taken to church early this morning a great many cars following. Lots of flowers & she was laid out in black & looked very happy & peaceful.

Down town I ran accross Jimmie French.
