not now recollected. In accordance with this notification three referees were appointed, James A. Morgen by said freedmen,[[crossed out]]William Edmondson[[\crossed out]] A. Purgeau by the undersigned, and [[crossed out]]A. Purgeau[[\crossed out]]William Edmondson by those two, and the matter fully investigated before them in the presence of the said officer of the Bureau, the result of which was that the referees did not all agree, but two of them Edmondson and Purgeau did agree, and decided that it would be full justice to both parties to reduce the account of the undersigned by the sum of twenty three dollars, leaving the matter even, or still a small balance in his favor.
He certainly did suppose that this would end the matter, and it would not be allowed to be re-opened by the Freedmens’ Bureau, although he was [[crossedout]]tied[[/crossedout]] notified by said officer soon after at that time, that the finding of the majority of the referees would probably not be satisfactory to the Bureau at Jackson.

During last week he was notified to appear before Major Sumner at Jackson about this same matter, and was before him on Saturday last, when without any such form of trial as he supposes to be recognised by Courts either military or
