Yazoo City Miss Sept 2nd 1867

Colonel H. H. Smith
A. A. Genl Mil Dist Miss,

Colonel.
I have the honor to report in compliance with orders received from your Office (delivered by Freedman Samuel Young). I went to Sunflower County to make investigation with regard to charges proferred against Mr S. Butler, and a Mr Carr, by Samuel Young and to take the wife of George Nelson from the Plantation of Alfred Murdock if she wished to leave I would respectfully report that in the case of Mr S. Butler I found things in the greatest confusion Him having lost his fine residence by fire only Monday before Butler himself in New Orleans - and his wife some forty miles away from the plantation. In the case of Carr, he is now in the hands of the civil authority at McNutt the county town some thirty miles from Butlers when I left the steamer
