Freedman Dispensary Station Grenada Miss Feb 27th 1868 Lieut Harrison. Sub Ast Commissioner Sir I have the honor to submit for your consideration the following report of the condition of Freedmen at this post & its immediate vicinity first from actual observation I consider the destitution of the freedmen Greater than at any time since they were made free; there are quite a number of old & worn out freemen of both sexes who are utterly unable to take care of themselves some of whom have actually died of starvation and there are others & not a few of both sexes who are greatly debilitated from miasmatic diseases Living in open damp out houses & who must Eventually die unless relief is furnished Medical aid under such circumstances can do but Little good. there are also a number of others; suffering with chronic diseases; Such as rheumatism bronchitus consumption Diarrhea Dysentery purulent ophthalmic Tumors Seropular &c. to whom it is impossible to administer the necessary relief in there destitute & Exposed condition these poor destute unfortunate persons are hanging around there colored
