On the way back we stopped at the Royal Palm Park, on Paradise Key, a tropical jungle. The Supt. is a cousin of a girl at the Bureau & was very nice to us, after he found out all about where we hailed from & took us about in the dense part. I shouldn't dare to step in it if I were there alone, - too many snakes! Orchids were growing on the tree trunks, all sorts tropical trees & vines climbing up. On the way [[?]] we met an entomologist who seeing my collecting net advanced with his, and introduced himself. He is a butterfly man from Wilmington, Del. We spent a half hour collecting together. On the way back, a bobtailed cat slunk across the road before us, & farther on we saw what we think was a diamond back rattle snake.... we didn't stop to investigate. The marshes have many hawks, & one hawk flew over with a long snake dangling from his claws. We saw many white egrets.
