No. 6. }

I. In order to secure the repairing of the Cottons gins, and Machinery on Davis Bend, so that cotton raised there by the Military Colony of Freedmen may be ready for market as soon as possible, Mr E.S. Bedford will proceed to Davis Bend, and take charge of the Banks Lake, Joe Davis, Jeff Davis, and Wood gins, together with all the machinery necessary to run them. He will remove the gin stands and machinery from the Jeff Davis and Lake gins, to the others mentioned, so as to make them of sufficient capacity to do the work. He will make all needful repairs, have wood cut, erect dry sheds, and be prepared in every way to carry forward the work of ginning Cotton by Sept 1st. We will keep accurate accounts of all expenditures, supported by vouchers, and report progress every fifteen days. All Officers on duty at that place will give him the assistance he may require.

II. All orders in force on Davis Bend, interfering with the Colored people cutting wood, and selling it on their own account, are hereby revoked. They will be allowed to cut, haul out, and sell their wood, without interference from any one.

I Maj E.B. Westyard 64th U S C I. in addition to his duties as Commanding officer of his regiment, will assume those of Comdg officer, Post Davis Bend, reporting as required by existing orders.

II Capt John Toms 64th U S C I. Act Asst Quartermaster in addition to his duties as such, will assume those of Provost Marshal of Freedmen, Post of Davis Bend, reporting for duty to Maj E.B. Westyard Comdg Post, and as required by existing orders. He will take possession of all property, formerly under charge of Capt. G.B. Norton, 64th U S C I. and be held responsible for the safe keeping of the same. No horses, Mules, farming utensels, furniture, or property of any kind will be removed, unless by order from this office. The Plantation known as the House Farm will also be under his control. All Superintendents in charge of colonies, or other employees of this Bureau, will report to him and be subject to his orders.

III Mr. O.K. Hawley, employee of this Bureau, will proceed to Natchez Miss. and in accordance with instructions from this office, receive all books, papers, Money, or other property, now in the hands of the Agents of the Treasury Department at that place, and which may be turned over by them. He is authorized to conduct the business growing out of above transfer, reporting direct to this office till further orders. All papers requiring the signature of the Asst Commissioner Freedmens Bureau for this State, or of his [[Reg?]] and Disb'g Officer, will be made out by him and forwarded to this office for signature.
