Bulletin No.65, November 1931

To our members:

ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT RECOVERING FROM OPERATION
Captain Pedrick, president of the Association, was obliged to undergo an emergency operation for appendicitis recently, in St. Vincent's Hospital. Encouraging reports from the hospital indicate that Captain Pedrick is on the road to recovery.

CONSTRUCTION OF MADISON AVENUE WATER MAIN TO START EARLY THIS MONTH
As our members on Madison Avenue between 47th and 57th Streets were informed in a special bulletin last month, a water main is to be constructed in Madison Avenue between these points. The condition of the sixty-year old main which is now serving this area makes construction of the new main imperative. At our request, all of the construction work is to be done at night, and the street is to be decked over during the day. Advertisements for bids for this work were published on October 26 and as soon as these bids are opened the contract will be let.

Construction of this water main at night and decking over the job during the day will cause a minimum of inconvenience in the conduct of the business along Madison Avenue and we are hopeful that, weather permitting, and if no serious obstacles are encountered, the job will be finished and the street repaved so that our Madison Avenue members may receive the full benefit of the Christmas shopping season.

Madison Avenue Car Track Area to be Repaired
As a result of a survey by the association of Madison Avenue car track area, extensive repairs will be made to the tracks and roadbed between 42nd and 57th Streets. Here again at our request, all repair work will be done at night. The work should start in about two weeks. Work on the 60th to 86th Street area has recently been completed.

MIDTOWN SQUAD EXTENDED BELOW 34TH STREET
So successful has been the additional police protection given to the section above 34th Street my Police Commissioner Mulrooney through the formation of the special Borough Headquarters Squad, that, upon our request, the area between 27th and 34th Streets, Lexington to Sixth Avenue, was added on October 16th to the district policed by this special squad. Two lieutenants from headquarters will be in charge of the Borough Headquarters men policing the 27th to 34th Street area. We are continuing our efforts to secure the extension down to 14th Street of this special protection in order to give the best possible police supervision to our entire district.

MEMBERS COOPERATING WITH EMERGENCY UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF COMMITTEE
At the request of Mr. Harvey D. Gibson, chairman of the Emergency Unemployment Relief Committee, our members who can do so have been asked to cooperate in the work of this Committee by fiving over parts of their window space to enable to Committee to display appeals in connection with the drive for funds to relieve unemployment distress. The response from the ground floor stores in our section has been extremely gratifying, and the Committee and the Association are arranging dates for the displays now.

The president of the Association is a member of the Executive Committee directing the activities of this drive, and, on behalf of the membership, has informed Mr. Gibson that the cooperation of The Fifth Avenue Association will be extended to his Committee in every possible way.

FIFTH AVENUE TRAFFIC POSTS
At this writing, all of the new bronze Fifth Avenue traffic signal posts are in place and work is going forward speedily with the installation of the necessary mechanical control systems which must be installed in each signal post. Delivery of these systems has been started and will increase in number during the next few weeks. Since our last Bulletin, the lanterns for the posts have been put in place and we hope that as soon as the Police Department has made the necessary inspection and tests, the new lights will be turned on.

PARKING SURVEY STARTED FOR ENTIRE SECTION
A new survey in connection with parking in our section has been started by the Association, in order to bring up to date the information which our offices must have on this important problem. Questionnaires will be sent to the ground floor stores and we hope that each member will give his reply the thought and consideration which this important question deserves. The increase in vehicular traffic which will come during the next few years prior to the completion of important public improvements
