BULLETIN NO.57, DECEMBER 1930

TAX ON SALES OPPOSED
We appeared before the State Commission on the Revision of Taxes, in cooperation with the Retail Dry Goods Association in opposition to the imposing of a retail sales tax in New York State, contending that it would be detrimental to both business and the public and is not a desirable substitute measure for affording the relief sought to reduce the burden on real estate, although our Association is heartily in sympathy with that objective. Under conditions prevailing during the present depression, we believe such a tax would not be justified.

CHRISTMAS POLICING OF SECTION TO BE AUGMENTED WITH SPECIAL FORCE
The annual precaution for the great Christmas displays of our stores and the protection of our shoppers is being followed out this year in a greatly augmented police force for Fifth, Madison, Park and Fourth Avenues and the cross streets, from November 17th until after the first of the year. Additional detectives, uniformed patrolmen and motorcycle policemen are operating in the section from 8th to 60th Street, Third to Seventh Avenue, a district into which no one with a police record may venture these days without inviting arrest "on general principles".

CHRISTMAS DAY A POSTAL HOLIDAY -- BUY NOW AND MAIL EARLY
There will be no carrier deliveries of mail on Christmas Day. The Post Office requests therefore that you mail your cards and parcels early for delivery before Christmas Day. Parcels and envelopes may be marked "PLEASE DO NOT OPEN UNTIL CHRISTMAS". For last minute mailings the Air Mail offers a quick, reasonable service which may help deliver your messages and gifts before Christmas.

NEW LIGHTS IN CENTRAL PARK
Work on the installation of new lights along the roadways of Central Park, advocated by our Association in February, 1928, and secured through efforts of our Parks and Plazas Committee, working with the Department of Water Supply, Gas & Electricity, is about 72 per cent completed. These lights are attached to a mast arm type of post and are set back slightly from the edge of the road. 200 watt lights are used instead of the old 150 watts. This increased wattage, together with the new location of the posts, will provide maximum lighting over the roadway surface. 389 of the new posts have already been installed and when the work is completed, there will be 534 of these new type posts.

A WORTHY CHRISTMAS ACTIVITY
Headquarters in New York City for the sale of Christmas seals for the relief of tuberculosis has been established in the old Bonwit Teller Building at 38th Street and 5th Avenue. The organization this year is cooperating with the unemployment campaigns in that booths established for the sale of these seals will afford some 300 positions to people now out of work. The proceeds of the sale of seals go towards the relief of 50,000 victims of this disease in New York City.
