I can not fill up all the spaces in the blank Reports you sent me, for my school is not sustained by any Society and consequently I have none of their books. I did not keep a daily register of everything required by your reports, but I send you approximate monthly Reports for the first three months, which are very nearly accurate. I trust that my reports will be received and you will be able to send me some money in a short time. I am a poor man and will have to give up my school and let it go down, if I do not get some aid, for the Freedmen are able to pay me but very little, and are not even able to buy books for themselves. I established the school against opposition at first, and have accomplished much, having learned 40 poor ignorant blacks how to read the Bible fluently. I have a Sunday School of 60 students and teach them every Sunday that I am not engaged in my ministerial labors. Some of the older ones take great interest in the Sabbath School.
