Dear Sir

It becomes my duty to write you a few lines in connection with the returns of my School and in behalf of the Freedmen of this place, as their Agent is at this time quite sick and unable to attend to it and requested me so to do.

In the first place I do not wish you to think me desireous of too much credit as I shall only state to you the facts. First I consulted your Agent at this place Mr Postel relative to the propriety of my becomeing Teacher for the Freedmen in this place and he was much pleased at the idea and promised me any assistance I should require. I then called upon the Freedmen they also made me fair promises upon this encouragement I concluded  to undertake the work when I called upon the Freedmen and like-wise their Agent for a room to teach in and both failed to respond I then upon my own Responsabillaty rented a Room at ten dollars per month being the best and only thing that I could do - I then had benches and desks made and put in the room I then bought lamps for the night School all of this so far has been at my expence, and even to a water bucket a cup and a broom I have furnished Now Sir I ask you to assist me as I
