And the boys upon retireing hold their hats imediately over their heads make a bow and bid me good evening and when ever or where ever any of my Scholars meet me they do like-wise, in fact I have been greatly disappointed as regards the Conduct of the Colored children and I am happy to say very agreeably disappointed, and I must say that they make much greater progress in their Studies than I expected them to make they thus far excell any School of white children that I have ever taught. I have children who commenced their letters with me two months ago that can spell off the book words of four and five letters very correctly But we are labouring under a great disadvantage for the want of proper Books there are but very few books in the School alike therefore it prevents me from putting them in classes as I would wish for I claim that students will make greater progress by being a number in a class and further more the teacher can as easily lecture a large class as he or she can one or two and thereby by save time for some other exercise therefore I hope you will not fail to send us the books called for in the return imediately and do if you can send Smiths little Speller as I prefer it to any other and have quite a number in the School already I also want chalk for the Black Board, as I consider the B-B- indespensable in a Shool Room I have one making which will cost six dollars
