the Rev Dr Thompson who is principal of the female college at this place.

The Dr' is a very popular minister, yet in a fit of passion he picked up a club and struck an old servant that has been in his family for a number of years, breaking his right arm. The Dr declared in his volunteer statement that the negro broke his own arm, by using it in warding off the blow, and thus placing it in the way of the club. How near the Dr came to carrying his point I do not know, but he finely [[finally]] admitted that if he had not struck the blow, the negroes arm would not of been broken.

The court made a state case of it and bound him in two thousand dollars for his appearance at the next circuit court.

At present every thing is very quiet in this Sub District and I have every reason to believe that the citizens both white and black have been very well satisfied with the course that I have taken.

Very Respectfully
