Bvt Maj Gen A.C.Gillem
Comd'g Sub Dist of Miss

Dear Sir
In accordance with your request we the undersigned members of the "Board of Registration" for the county of Newton State of Miss have the honor to report to you that destitution is very great in our county in most places it exists with the widows and orphans, in one beat alone we have the names of 40 widows, with them and the orphans there are 140 persons some of them in a starving condition besides others in the same beat that we have not the names of. these are entirely white, the other beats [[strikethrough]]are entirely[[/strikethrough]] we have no names, but destitution exists in about the same proportion, all over the county there is not so much destitution among the colored class as they are principally hired by persons who have the means to furnish them.

We can not give you the amount of crops raised in 1866 but there was not enough on account of the failure which was caused by too much rain in the early part of the season and after that a drouth. The kind of crops were corn, wheat and oats, besides cotton which was not cultivated to the same extent
