I find that they stand very much in dread of incurring some heavy responsibility by Registering & voting and any information given them by a Government Officer, in whom they seem to have all confidence, is happily received. No doubt, bad men have impressed upon their credulity by circulating reports tending to operated upon their fears so as to prevent Registration. They seem much pleased & delighted when I tell them the object of Registration -the benefit accruing therefrom, and that the Government will protect them in the free exercise of the election franchise.
