Among the freedmen in the employ of Thornton & Co., I found two or three who had registered, and afterwards destroyed their certificates of registration. They had been brought to believe the false rumor that they would be held to military service, and supposed that they might escape by destroying their certificates. 

I endeavored to, and believe I did, remove this mischievous impression from their minds, and they promised to apply to the Board of Registration for other certificates. 

Having been relieved from duty in this Sub-District on the 28th inst., it was not in my power to visit the precinct of Hickory, in Newton County, particularly referred to by Mr. J.E.G. Smith, Recorder of the Board, in his endorsement on my letter.
