Reported to this office that George Mayhew in gathering the crop did not act fairly, and not according to contract. Both parties appeared at the office, investigated the case far as the facts then before we would best defend a final decision until Monday at which time I informed the parties that I would visit Mayhew plantation if practicable and settle the matter. Settled

Made a statement the same day in this Office that George Mayhew struck him two or three times with an oxe bow, also with his fist, because he remarked to him that he did not think that he was dividing the corn according to contract
Referred the case to the Civil Authorities

Reports to this Office that Rutherford Spearman refused to divide the crop of corn according to contract
Wrote to Spearman to call at the Head Quarters on Monday 11 Oct'r, A.M. to settle with the freedmen, Spearman came to the Office at the time appointed, but after investigation deferred settling the matter until the ballance of the crop was gathered, and notified the parties that they would inform me when it was gathered.

Made complaint to this Office that the manager of Hoy & Bert plantation J.P. Flippen told him that he did not want him on the plantation, any longer, but would not settle with him until Christmas Wrote to Flippen to call at the Office. Flippen came to the Office, and agreed to pay him his back wages if any was due him, but in conflict with contract.
