his feet and legs were badly frozen, when the said Stevenson went to the Jail and contracted with him, to take him and, if he would work for him faithfully for four years which the boy promised to do, he was then about 18 years of age, (this was last winter, the boy was taken to Mr. Stevensons) but was so badly frozen that it bacame necessary to amputate both his legs above the ankle.
Stevenson, subsequently presented a claim for taking care of the boy, and the board of Police allowed some $150.00 that the High Sheriff bought this claim for about $80, paid for it out of the money raised on the one dollar tax on Freedmen which he had collected.
The boy is still held by Stevenson on the contract, and is represented as being cruelly treated - he is now able to do almost any kind of work, & of some kinds, as much as a sound man.
The mother & brother are industrious & propose to take the boy away. I am unable to get at the history of the case as it appears on record, the Clerk of the Court, not being here at this time - I am however, informed by them who knew something of the case, that they believe the abuse to be in substance, correct.
I desire to be instructed as to what I should do in this case.
