Planters that the Freedmen will not work, faithfully, in gathering the crops. I have had to visit a number of plantations in consequence of these complaints & applications for redress under them, and in every case, I found the labor much disorganized.
The truth is, they have become disheartened since they find they can lay up nothing for the coming year; and hardly meet the demands of the present year. The Employer has in some instances, been the cause of the disorganization of the labor by bad management. Since I impressed upon them the importance of of observing their contracts they have worked diligently.
