Bureau R. F. and A. L. Office S. A. Comr Sub. Dist. Grenada Grenada, Miss. October 31st 1867 Capt. J. W. Sunderland. Act. Asst. Adjt. Genl Vicksburg, Miss. Captain, I have the honor to submit the following report of the operations of the Bureau in this Sub. District during the month of October 1867. [[left margin]] Number of Freed people in the District [[/left margin]] According to the census of 1866 the whole number of Freedmen in this Sub. District is (26.114) (Twenty six Thousand one hundred and fourteen) This number is distributed amongst the four Counties comprising this Sub. District as follows Yalobusha County 8.285 Carroll County 1.13.94 Choctaw County 45.01 Calhoun County 19.34 Total 261.14 Since the last Report Carroll County has been attached to this Sub. Dist. by Special Orders No 44. Office Asst. Comr dated Vicksburg, Miss. Oct. 11th 1867 [[left margin]] Condition & how paid [[/left margin]] The condition of the Freedmen as far as I can learn is not so prosperous as is to be desired. Some of them, though this class is comparatively small, show a determination to avoid labor as far as possible and live by plunder or charity. Others, by far the larger class, have worked faithfully during the past year, and consequently have raised sufficient corn and other provisions to over
