The sanctity of the marital relations among the freed people is not properly estimated. It, however, cannot be expected of a people that were never taught the sacredness of an institution so important, when once impressed upon them, to properly appreciate it in so short a time. I have labored assiduously to inculcate proper notions on this subject, and I am pursuaded that my efforts have been productive of much good.

It is easily discernable by a cognitive mind that, as a general thing, there is a disposition on the part of the southern whites to avail themselves of the colored man's ignorance in order to defraud him of his just earnings. Their prejudice against all measures which have increased the elevation of the colored race is so great that no principle of honor deters them from stooping to commit acts of the very lowest character.
