Scripps-Howard Junior
Aviator National Races

Birth of the nation-wide Scripps-Howard Junior Aviator organization resulted from the success of the 1934 National Air Races Flying Model Contest. Thousands of youngsters no only were intensely interested in aviation but were spending a great deal of time constructing flying and non-flying models of all types of planes. Today the organization boasts over 300,000 members in cities from coast-to-coast. Maj. Al Williams, speed pilot and idol of American youth, heads the Junior Aviator movement as National Commander.

"Aviation Days" have been sponsored by Junior Aviators of Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Buffalo, Toledo and Akron. A total of over 200,000 spectators witnessed the boy pilots perform with senior flyers headed by Maj. Williams backgrounding the shows with acrobatics and daring air maneuvers.

Participating in the Junior Aviator National Races this year were over 200 boy pilots, all champions of their respective city-wide contests. The meet, he'd annually under sanction of the Junior Division of the National Aeronautic Association, is staged for four days prior to the National Air Races. The opening day of the National races is dedicated "Junior Aviator Day" and the visiting boys are the guests of air race officials of the sponsoring city.
