THE 1938 BENDIX TROPHY RACE

At 12:01 A. M., September 3, the first of the trim racers entered in the Bendix Trophy Race, will be lifted from the runway at Union Air Terminal and sent hurtling on its course to Cleveland, two thousand and fifty-one miles away. The other planes will follow in succession at times designated by the pilots, and to finish as winners must arrive at Cleveland between the hours of 12 noon and 6 P. M., September 3.
The Bendix Trophy Race is sponsored by Mr. Vincent Bendix, President of the Bendix Aviation Corporation, with the object of furthering fast transportation by air. Today's racing speeds will be tomorrow's standard transport speeds, carrying pay loads of passengers, mail and express. In 1922, the daring Kelly and MacCready, flew non-stop from New York to San Diego, in the then phenomenal time of thirty-two hours. Today anyone can step aboard a comfortable Air Liner and make the same journey in less than half that time. There is no way of predicting the advancement that another decade will see in Commercial and Military Aviation, and that advancement will depend, to a great extent, on the airplanes and pilots, and others like them, that you will watch leave United Air Terminal tonight. 
In every sense, the Bendix Trophy Race is a free-for-all competition. Any make of airplane may be used, special gasoline may be put in the tanks, and the motors may be super-charged. Very few of the racers will fly at the same altitudes, because
