Bendix Trophy Race

"Almost any airplane in this year's race ought to be able to bear that record with ease," said Therkelsen. "Most of the applications we have received are so far from former Army and Navy pilots who will be flying out-down and souped-up fighter planes, P-38s, Mustangs, Corsairs, Hellcats, and the like."
The Bendix Trophy Race, sponsored by the Bendix Aviation Corporation, is a free-for-all race, open to any pilot, man or woman, flying any type of airplane, single or multi-engined. The $25,000 in prizes provides $10,000 for the fasted elapsed time from Van Nuys to Cleveland, $5,000 for second, $1,000 for the woman pilot making the fastest time from Van Nuys to Cleveland, are other prizes for the next five places.
All the entrants in this year's race are expected to check in at the Aviation Maintenance Corporation plant at Metropolitan Airport several days before the event for last minute checkups, tests and servicing and to familiarize themselves with the field. Competing planes will be required to be at the starting line approximately twelve hours before takeoff and from then until the actual start will be impounded.
