AIR RACING AND THE N.A.A.

THE National Air Races which were sanctioned by the National Aeronautic Association, are officially conducted according to rules of safety and sportsmanship recognized the world over. They are supervised by technical personnel of the N.A.A. organization which represents in this county the international air sport governing body, the Federation Aeronautique Internationale.

As the United States member of FAI, the National Aeronautic Association participates with 30 other nations in an aeronautical federation formed in 1905 to govern air racing and record attempts throughout the world. The rules and regulations of the FAI, developed from the composite thought and experience of aviation leaders in all these nations, are designed to give all competitors an equal and fair opportunity and to provide for conduct of races and other competitions with a maximum of safety.

These are the rules which must govern all important competitive air events, and the sanction of the National Aeronautic Association is proof that the National Air Races are being operated according to these FAI rules. To insure active supervision of the conduct of all sanctioned air races and record trials, NAA appoints a Contest Board of qualified leaders from the various phases of aeronautical activity who service as a sporting tribunal for the promotion, guidance and control of air sports in the United States.

Thus, as the sporting and air record authority for this country, the National Aeronautic Association has played an integral part in the contribution which air racing has made to the development of aviation.

This contribution has been substantial. Through the years, the National Air Races and many other air competitions, fostered and carefully supervised by the NAA, have served to arouse the interest of countless thousands.

Though aviation no longer needs an introduction to the public at large, an event like the National Air Races unquestionably does serve to quicken the interest in this business of flying, not only of those who see the show but of all who may read about it in their newspapers and hear about it on their radios, all over this country and abroad.

In addition to the traditional racing events, the National Air Races also provide a dramatic display of private, civilian aviation in action, as hundreds of small planes converge upon Detroit for the show; and an exhibit of military aircraft staged by Air Force and Nany planes. The official character of the National Air Races, because of their conduct under FAI rules and the careful supervision of the National Aeronautic Association for many years, has led to the adoption of the Air Races by the military services as proper setting for an annual public display of their aircraft and equipment.
