PACING THE PROGRESS OF flight

Today, two jet fighters use as much fuel as an entire World War II squadron. America's big new bombers take 2,000 gallons of gasoline at a crack. And whereas the production of 100-octane gasoline was a manufacturing miracle a dozen years ago, today's airplane engines demand a much higher rated gasoline.
These tremendous and growing aviation fuel requirements have been met with quality to spare by America's petroleum industry. Ever since the Wright Brothers' first flight, aviation progress and petroleum progress have gone hand in hand.
