Command of the Seas

Naval Aviation

The primary mission of your Navy is Command of the Seas. Since the early days of World War II, Naval Aviation has demonstrated its ability to give to the Navy the added striking power and defensive capabilities that are needed to accomplish this mission successfully.

The visit of the USS TICONDEROGA to Philadelphia's International Airport marks the first time in the history of the National Air Show that an aircraft carrier has been able to participate in the program. Its participation is also a symbol of the giant strides being made by Naval Aviation through constant research and development.

At this year's show you will see some of the fastest jet fighter planes launched from the deck of a carrier that is not underway at sea, but tied quietly at the side of a pier-a feat that was impractical before the Navy's recent development of the tremendously powerful steam catapult. Other developments, too, have kept Naval Aviation in the foreground as the concepts of aerial warfare have been modified and developed to conform to the age of supersonic flight and guided missiles:

*Navy attack planes whose pilots can hit a pinpoint target, knocking out enemy positions so ground troops can move ahead...

*Navy "VTO" turboprop fighters capable of Vertical Take Off...

*Navy anti-submarine planes, airships, helicopters that can ferret out submerged enemy subs and destroy them with deadly accuracy...

*Navy helicopters that perform a thousand essential missions...

*Navy jet seaplane fighters on hydro-skis that can operate from hidden lagoons and open bays from the arctic to the south seas...

*Navy long-range bombers, transports, seaplanes, airships , experimental aircraft, guided missiles, stratosphere piercing rockets...

As you visit the Navy displays and come aboard the USS TICONDEROGA, the officers and men of Naval Aviation will welcome the opportunity to explain to you come of the latest technical advances that assure your Navy's continued Command of the Seas.
