AMPHIBIOUS warfare requirements have resulted in development by Marines of the most effective close air support tactics and techniques in existence. Constant research and development are carried on to continually improve them. Changing conditions brought on by scientific advances, including A-H bomb warfare, is also the subject of ever-increasing Marine research.

Extending the military horizon is the Marines' new concept of "Vertical Envelopment". This embodies the helicopter air-lifting of assault troops to the battle objective behind enemy lines, which by its very nature carries a triple-barreled punch. It provides for the establishment of "islands" of operation deep in enemy territory for attacks on the rear flanks. Once established, these "islands" can be completely supported and supplied by helicopter. Return flights evacuate wounded troops to aid stations and hospital ships on a 24-hour schedule.

Pioneers in the use of the helicopter, the Marines' have proved its worth in the frozen hills of Korea and on the burning sands of the Yucca Flats atomic test site.

Swept-wing jets, transport helicopters, new weapons, new tactics and new techniques have changed the Marine Corps of a decade ago. But today, as always, the Marines continue to maintain their traditional position as a "Force in Readiness".

The close air support developed by Marines is now even more effective than ever before. Cold war, shooting war, little or big, and in times of peace, the Marine air-ground team stands ever ready to carry out its assigned missions...and keep ahead in the development of new tactics to meet ever-changing conditions.
