Sponsored by General Electric Co.

Major General Albert Boyd of the Wright Air Development Center, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base accepts the General Electric Trophy from C.. W. LaPierre, General Manager, Aircraft Gas Turbine Div., General Electric Company, for the new 500 kilometer speed record established in 1954 by Major John L. Armstrong, at Dayton.

THE GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY (Aircraft Gas Turbine Division) is sponsoring a cross-country record run to be flown by three USAF B-47 Bombers from March Air Force Base, Riverside, California to Philadelphia International Airport. These Boeing Stratojets are equipped with six G-E Turbojet engines.

This is the third year these special trophy events have been established by the General Electric Company. The 1953 classic consisted of an event against time by a North American F-86D, powered by a General Electric J47-17 engine over a 15 to 25 kilometer course. It was an event at Dayton, won by Capt. Harold E. Collins of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base at a speed of 707 miles per hour.

The 1954 classic was a 500 kilometer world record attempt, closed course. It was won by Major John L. Armstrong, Wright Air Development Center pilot, who established a new world record when he flew his F-86H North American powered with a J73-3 G-E Turbojet engine at an average speed of 649.460 miles per hour.

LYCOMING-POWERED FLYBY

AN EXECUTIVE AIRCRAFT demonstration sponsored by Avco Manufacturing Corp. Twin-Engine planes with power plants built by the Lycoming Division of Avco Manufacturing Corporation will be a daily feature in the special flyby, demonstrating how the planes can fly and land on one engine alone. Five different planes, each with Lycoming engines, are scheduled to be seen.

The aircraft all provide twin-engine safety with single engine performance. Termed the "Safest Offices over Earth," the planes to be seen include the Piper Apache, the Aero Commander, the Beech Bonanza, the Grumman Super Widgeon and the Royal Gull. They afford intermediate transportation at speeds approaching 200 miles an hour, with a range of 700 to over 1,000 miles.

Their power plants range from twin 150 horsepower 4 cylinder to twin 275 horsepower 6 cylinder horizontally opposed air cooled engines.

"Happy to be Aboard"
Chance Vought Aircraft--designer and builder of high-performance military aircraft since 1917- welcomes you to the National Aircraft Show. We're happy to be aboard. Visit our exhibit and see the Navy's F7U-3 Cutlass and the Regulus guided missile; we'll tell you what security restrictions allow us to disclose on our new XF8U-1 carrier-based dayfighter, capable of faster-than-sound speed in level flight.
