OVERHEATED SIGN — It wasn't really 185 degrees in Beverly, Mass.; it only felt that way. Mechanics investigating the trouble found what perspiring residents suspected: The wiring overheated.

Bendix Air Race To Take Off Here

Plan Classic Speed Event For July 28 From O'Hare

For the first time in its 26-year history, the renowned Bendix trophy race will originate in Chicago.

Air Defense Command officials said Monday the classic air race will start from O'Hare field at about noon Sunday, July 28.

SIX TOP Air Defense Force pilots, two each from the Eastern, Central and Western areas, will fly in the race which ends at Andrews Air Force Base, Washington, D.C.

Air Force officers say this race is also expected to be the first supersonic competition with planes averaging the speed of sound or better.

A new speed record is looked for, says the Air Force.

PILOTS WILL be using Convair F-102 Delta Dagger jet interceptors, expected to fly the 615-mile course to Washington in under an hour.

Planes will take off at five-minute intervals and fly at altitudes up to 50,000 feet. The event will climax the Air Force's Golden Anniversary air show.

The first winner of the annual race, sponsored by Bendix Aviation Corp., was Gen. James A. Doolittle who in 1931 average 223 miles an hour.

CURRENT record holder is Maj. Manuel "Pete" Fernandez, Korean jet ace who zoomed to an average 666 miles an hour last year. He flew a North American F-100 Super Sabre.

Malcolm P. Ferguson, Bendix president, said the Air Foundation of Cleveland will administer this year's race.

It will be timed officially by the National Aeronautic Association, U.S. affiliate of the Federation Aeronautic, world governing body for aviation events.

Major purpose of the race is to show the Air Defense Command's ability to deploy its interceptor forces immediately against a potential enemy attack.

Daley Says Streets Are More Swept Up
City street cleaning activities were stepped up during the first six months of 1957, says Mayor Daley.
Thirty-seven new street sweepers were placed in service, bringing the total to 102, the mayor said.
They removed 2,600 tons of dirt from 84,500 miles of streets, an increase of 11 per cent over the first six months of 1956.

   ALSO, said the mayor:
—More than 32,000 warning notices were issued, double the number the previous year.
—1,678 tickets were issued, resulting in cafeteria court fines totaling $5,653.
—279 summonses were issued, and 89 convicted violators paid fines totaling $2,790.
—The special vacant lot task force removed 146 dangerous abandoned sheds and shacks.
—The special police detail assigned to cleanup control was doubled from 25 to 50 men.
"I hope," said Daley, "that all our citizens will join the clean-up drive and continue the work of making Chicago a cleaner and healthier city for all."
