COLONEL ROBERT LISLE GOULD, USAF

Robert Lisle Gould was born in Baltimore, Maryland, January 13, 1910. He enlisted in the Reserves in October 1935, later accepting a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the National Guard on June 20, 1936. Colonel Gould served short tours of active duty during the period from June 20, 1936 to October 3, 1940. During this period, he qualified for and was rated a Pilot, Combat Observer, and Airplane Observer.

Colonel Gould came on active duty in April 1942. During World War II he served in various training assignments in the United States and in May 1945, was transferred to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater with a B-29 Bombardment Wing. While assigned as Wing Operations Officer, he participated in several combat missions and on November 1, 1945, flew one of the four B-29's which made a non-stop flight from Japan to Washington. He then returned to the Pacific Air Command, United States Army Headquarters until June 1946, at which time he returned to the United States.

After separation from active duty, Colonel Gould remained in the National Guard and served short tours of active duty annually, including a five and one-half month tour as a student at the Air War College in January 1951.

Colonel Gould was again ordered to active duty effective July 30, 1951. He was assigned to Headquarters Eastern Air Defense Force, Newburgh, New York, where he served until he was reassigned to Alaska as Deputy for Operations, Alaskan Air Command. In September 1953, he was appointed Special Assistant to the Commander, and served in that capacity until his return to the United States in June 1954. He was then assigned to Headquarters Central Air Defense Force, Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base, Missouri, where he served as Director of Plans and Requirements and Assistant Deputy for Operations. Colonel Gould assumed command of the 343rd Fighter Group, Duluth Municipal Airport, Duluth, Minnesota, on 1 July 1956.

Colonel Gould has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He is rated a Command Pilot.

He was promoted to First Lieutenant (permanent) July 13, 1940; to Captain (temporary) August 5, 1942; to Major (temporary) November 1 1943; to Lt Col (temporary) September 9, 1945; to Lt Col (permanent) May 24, 1946; to Colonel (permanent) December 30, 1950.
