big step in giving America guidelines as to what will be necessary as a daily occurrence a few years hence.
After the fanfare has subsided, this professionally planned and flown operation has accomplished this:
It reminded us again, that Americans, once informed and honored with considerate information affecting their comfort and welfare, return the favor with pride of participation.
In the Bendix Race, communications made the difference thanks to newspapers, radios, television and other media. Without them, the March 5th dash could have become a 1000-ring circus of suits and countersuits.
The Bendix Race of 1962 underscores NAA's contention that the real payoff from its work in certifying domestic and international records is most often returned many fold in the form of side benefits such as this. Records are not run just for the sole purpose of making headlines and generating publicity.

Army-Bell Team Set Speed Mark
Three record claiming flights of the Army's Bell-built, YHU-ID -- two for time-to-climb and one for speed in a specified distance -- were performed by Army pilots in April. The claims must be certified by the F. A. I.
The first mark was set by Capt. Boyce B. Buckner, April 13, when he piloted his Iroquois from sea level to 6,000 meters (19,686 ft.) in five minutes and 51 seconds. This bettered the official record of six minutes and 42.3 seconds set last October by a USAF-Kaman H-43B.
The following day, Lt. Col. Leland F. Wilhelm dashed from sea level to 3,000 meters in two minutes and 14.6 seconds, bettering the official record of two minutes, 44.5 seconds, which is also held by the H-43B.
The International closed course speed record for helicopters, held by Russia, was claimed by Capt. William F. Gurley, when he averaged 134.9 mph on two round-trip night flights over a 320 mile course, between established points near the Bell plants at Hurst and at Longview, Texas. His record top speed was 150 mph.
Gurley's flight bettered the official world record for 1,000-kilometer (621.4 miles) closed circuit speed course for helicopters of a specified weight. The current standing record of 87.856 mph is held by Soviet pilot Fiodor Belouchkine, set while flying a Russian MI-1 in June of 1960.
Captain Gurley completed the night flight around searchlight pylons in four hours and 28 min., 31 sec.
