Dalton, Ga Oct 31st, 1867

Major J R Lewis
Acct Asst Comm

Sir

I have the honor to enclose herewith teachers monthly school report, for month ending Oct 31st 1867 for Whitfield County Ga. with the following statement. The school opened October 1st with 40 scholars but gradually lessened in number until the 13th of Oct when Mr Compton had to close his doors for want of attendance. He has received no compensation from the colored people for his services as teacher for October and but eighteen dollars for Sept. The prospect is that a colored school will soon be opened here by Nov. Wm F Wentworth of Mass under the direction of Mr E A Ware. Supt Education. And will probably meet with success. As all that is wanting to their success is confidence on the part of the colored people in the culture & experience of the teacher.
