Stoughton July 24th

Dear Doris -

I have been quite busy all the morning. I got up and finished cooking my pot roast and while that was cooking, made a berry pie, with berries I managed to get around the house they are very scarce this season owing to the late frosts. Ace Sylvester found a patch in back of the catholic cemetry yesterday and gave Pa a quart to bring home, you know Pa keeps his money for him so he won't be down and out after having his spells, no one else would bother with him and he knows it. Alice Talbot has just called up and told me that the Saffords had hired the Beales place and are going to take lodgers. Helen comes with them I can't hardly believe it, how can they pay such a rent? Dr Shour came Wednesday she is looking well and was up here two days a going twice yesterday and brought her sewing she likes to come up she says, and regrets to think that you are not here at this time, as she supposed you'd be.

I hope to get my other dress made this week if the yarn doesn't come meanwhile. Pa has just seen a wheelbarrow load trundled over to the Beals house, by the Saffords, so it must be true. We are now having new beets out of the garden there are two long rows of them and they are too thick to grow good.
