There are nine islands in the Great Salt Lake: One commonly called Bird Island. There congregate, during the breeding season, thousands of pelicans and gulls, and when they depart are accompanied by the new generation of their kind in uncounted numbers. A visit to the island affords a unique experience. The Great Salt Lake covers an approximate area of 2,140 square miles. The water of the lake is 21% mineral from which thousands of tons of salt are extracted annually.

Dear Ma:
We have passed Salt Lake and are now in sight of long ranges of mountains beyond sage brushey plains. Shadows on them are beautiful, but country as a whole is not to be compared with New Hampshire. Love to you all. Lena
