Agreement with Freedmen

This agreement, made this 1st day of June A.D. 1865 By and Between Shadrick Rodgers of the County of Covington and State of Mississippi of the first & the person hereinafter named and undersigned freedmen of the same place part heretofore of the second part of the second part 

Witness that for the purpose of cultivating the plantation known as the Shadrick Rodgers Place in County & State aforesaid during the year commencing on the 1st day of June 1865 & terminating on the 1st day of Jan 1866 the said Shadrick Rodgers party of the 1st part in consideration of the promises & conditions hereinafter mentioned on the part of the part of second part agrees to furnish to the said laborers and those rightfully dependent upon them free of charge clothing & food of good quality & sufficient quantity; good & sufficient quarters medical attendance when necessary & kind & humane treatment to alot from the lands of said plantation for garden purposes one acre to each family such allotment to include a reasonable use of tools & animals for the cultivation of the same to exact only one half days labor on Saturday & none whatever on Sundays. 

Nathan of the second part agrees his part to remain on the above named place untill the 1st day of Jan 1866 for his Board & Clothing &c. and obligates himself to perform the amount of Labour Required in this agreement. & its further agreed that in case the said Shadrick Rodgers shall fail neglect or refuse to fulfil any of the obligations assumed by him or shall furnish said part of the second with insufficient food or clothing or be guilty of cruelty to him he shall besides the
