I have an impression that Bates thinks I allow one of the boys to hang around me too much.  He has a bug on such things and it so happens that he has seen a certain boy in my room after school, speak to me in the hall, come into the building with me at night - just from the door but of course he didn't know that - and the other after-noon he stuck his head into a room where I was hearing the boy rehearse his part for the play.  I always shout, "Come in, Mr. Bates."  "O, no, I haven't time," he replies.  But that time I made up my mind to have him, so I said, "O' just a minute, Mr. Bates" and of course when he got seated he got so curious and I suppose sure he could do it better than we were doing, that he stayed looking over books.  Then we came to a part that I couldn't get as I wanted to.  I asked him to do it and he began and not only did that but kept on for a half hour or so.  He did well too.  I told him to come again, so I don't know whether his fears are allayed or not.
