FEDERAL OLD-AGE AND SURVIVORS INSURANCE
(Under the Social Security Act)
Millions of wage and salary workers in this country, and their families also, are covered by insurance under the Social Security Act. Monthly benefits began January 1, 1940. These payments go to any qualified worker at age 65 or over, to his wife at the same age, to his young children; or at his death, whatever his age, to his widow, his young children, or his dependent parents over 65.
Keep your social security account number card and, for safety, make a record of the number in other papers. The number will be good as long as you live; when you, or any of your family, file a claim for benefits, the number will identify your account. The wages credited to that account will then be used to calculate the benefits that may be due.
It is possible to check on your social security account at any time by writing to the Social Security Board and asking for a statement of your wage credits. Any mistake that might be found can be corrected-if reported within 4 years. Keep the receipts furnished you by your employer, because they show your wages and also the taxes paid.
If you do not know the address of the nearest Social Security Board, your local post office can give it to you.
