About Manhattan Theatre Club

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Lynne Meadow and Executive Producer Barry Grove, Manhattan Theatre Club has been in the forefront of American Theatre for the past three decades.
New York and World Premieres created under MTC's auspices travel across America and around the world. Since its founding in 1970, MTC productions have earned ten Tony Awards, three Pulitzer Prizes, thirty-four Obie Awards, seventeen Drama Desk Awards, as well as numerous Drama Critics Circle, Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World Awards. Plays developed by MTC have included Love! Valour! Compassion!; Putting it Together; Sylvia; Valley Song; Lips Together, Teeth Apart; Collected Stories; Four Dogs and a Bone; Sight Unseen; Ain't Misbehavin'; Mass Appeal; Crimes of the Heart, The Piano Lesson, Fuddy Meers, The Tale of the Allergist's Wife and the curent Broadway hit Proof. Actors such as Nathan Lane, Christine Baranski, Bernadette Peters, Linda Lavin, LisaGay Hamilton, Sarah Jessica Parker, Alison Janney, James Naughton and Mary Louise Parker; playwrights such as Terrence McNally, A.R. Gurney, Arthur Kopit, Athol Fugard, Charles Busch, Beth Henley, John Patrick Shanley and August Wilson, are among the many artists who have committed to MTC's excellent reputation.
MTC is committed to bringing theatre to the widest possible audience. Initiatives which enable MTC's work to reach an ever-growing range of theatregoers include moving successful plays originally produced at MTC's City Center home to larger Broadway or Off-Broadway venues for an extended run; originating certain productions in larger venues; collaborating with leading regional theaters to bring major new American plays to New York; and bringing student and family audiences to City Center through the ambitious Education Program.
Manhattan Theatre Club is committed not only with the season of plays on its stages, but also with a developmental process that leads new works from conception to production. The Creative Center on West 43rd Street, housing state of the art rehearsal facilities and the staff offices, is representative of MTC's commitment to the behind-the-scenes activities of theatre. The Center - a crossroads for some of the most dynamic talent in American theatre - houses numerous rehearsals, readings and workshops through the Play Development and Musical Theatre Programs.
MTC has created one of the country's most significant and innovative education programs, reaching a diverse body of students and families in the New York metropolitan area. The Core Program brings students to a matinee performance after intensive classroom preparation. The Family Matinee series brings students and adults to a morning workshop followed by a matinee performance. In Write on the Edge, at-risk students develop original scripts inspired by an MTC production they have studied and attended. And in the national arena, TheatreLink connects students in geographically isolated communities across the country on a playwriting/production project via the Internet.

Manhattan Theatre Club at City Center
MTC had its first performancce at City Center in 1984, and City Center has been its artistic base ever since. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial future together and are delighted to be among the many artistic groups who call City Center home. We are deeply grateful to City Center for its support of and commitment to MTC and our artists.
