[left page, left column] STAGE DIRECTIONS Before, or After? When it comes to dining in the Theatre District, theatre goers have many options to consider. Fortunately, there are literally hundreds of restaurants to choose from in the West 40’s and 50’s. But— where else but on Restaurant Row (46th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues) can you find Chinese, Chilean, French, Italian, Moroccan, Russian, Spanish, Thai, and Vietnamese cuisine all on the same block? Pastor Dale D. Hansen of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, chairman of the Restaurant Row Association, counts 25 different eateries on the Row, Back in the early 70’s when the Times Square area resembled something out of The Life, local restaurateurs approached Mayor John V. Lindsay about helping to lure diners west of then-seedy Eighth Avenue. The result was a hugely successful street fair followed by special street signs, better lighting and tree plantings. Restaurant Row is flourishing, thanks in part to its happy symbiosis with the thriving Broadway community. (“When the theatres do well,” says Rev. Hansen, “we do well too.”) Star gazers should keep their eyes open, since Restaurant Row eateries are prime celebrity watering holes. And take a good look at your waiter—he or she might turn out to be tomorrow’s brightest Broadway star, STAGE DIRECTIONS is presented, courtesy of Playbill, by The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc., the national trade association for the commercial theatre industry.
