STAGE DIRECTIONS FROM THE LEAGUE

"KID, I'M GOING TO MAKE YOU A PRODUCER..."

The Commercial Theatre Institute, a joint project of Theatre Development Fund and The League of American Theatres and Producers, has adopted a crucial mission: molding the producing talent of tomorrow. CTI will host its 15th annual three-day seminar for prospective producers, April 25-27, 1997, in a Broadway theatre to be named. The program provides a wealth of information directly from the front lines, delivered by industry leaders. Does the training work? Just ask one of the more than 50 graduates who are actively producing today.

CTI Executive Director Frederic B. Vogel has once again assembled a star-studded cast of speakers. Friday's session will begin with attorney Robert Barendes' in-depth discussion of the legal considerations of commercial producing. General Manager Maria DiDia will follow with a detailed overview of the union requirements for developmental productions. Concluding the first day's events will be Marshall Purdy illuminating the vital role of the general manager through his line-by-line analysis of the budget for the recent Broadway play, Seven Guitars.

Saturday's lineup will feature case studies from some of the most prominent producers working today: Elizabeth Williams, Leonardo Soloway, Steven Baruch, Marty Bell and Rocco Landesman (president of Jujamcyn Theaters), who will discuss recent large-scale Broadway productions. The afternoon panel discussions will focus on Off-Broadway and smaller-scale Broadway productions, as well as on relationships between not-for-profit and commercial theatres.

Sunday's sessions begin with a marketing and advertising panel led by Linda Lehman, an account executive with Serino Coyne Inc., and Joseph Iacono, specializing in outreach to nontraditional audiences. Abbie Strassler of the League and Marvin and Krauss, general manager of Taking Sides, will follow with a discussion of the Broadway Alliance: its purpose, specific terms of it contracts and the progress to date of this ambitious producing initiative. The final speaker will be Kevin McCollum, producer of the smash hit Rent and a CTI graduate.

In an industry whose efforts to develop new audiences and new creative talent are well-documented, the Commercial Theatre Institute deserves a standing ovation. It represents one of the most essential ways in which this industry is looking out for its own future.
