on the shore of Lake Patzcuaro at an alt. of about 6600 ft. Here I prosecuted my letter to the Jefe Politico and then settled down to work at the Hotel Ibarra near the station on the lake shore. This is one of the worst hotels I found in Mex. while it is situated in one of the most beautiful spots in the republic.

An irregular lake winding about in bays among the hills for 15 miles or so & not over about 200 ft. deep in deepest place.

Here & there along shore are areas of rushes & flag with a broad belt of a yellow water lily (Nymphea mexicana) in the open spaces along shore.

From the shore of the lake the hills rise in sweeping contours - nowhere forming cliffs but ever in harmonious slopes & rounded butresses of volcanic soil over which is found a cover of vivid green along the lower slopes, broken by areas of corn land or the roofs & walls of the numerous lawns & villages
