Agreement with Freedmen

This agreement, made this 19th day of September A. D. 1865, by and between Jas. M. Keeble as agent for Dr. J. Manley of the State of Tennessee of the first part, and the person hereinafter named and undersigned Freedmen of the State of Mississippi, Madison County, parties hereto of the second part.

Witnesseth, that for having cultivated the plantation known as "Trio" in the County of Madison State of Mississippi last aforesaid during this year commencing the 1st day of May A. D. 1865 and termination the 1st day of November A. D. 1865. The said Jas. Keeble agent party of the first part in consideration of the promises and conditions hereinafter mentioned on the part of the Freedmen of said "Trio" plantation of the second part, agrees to [[strikethrough]] farm [[/strikethrough]] pay to each 1st class hand $7.00 (Seven dollars) and to each 2nd class hand $5.00 (Five Dollars) per month, to be paid in the products of said plantation at the market value of the same at the time of delivery.

It is further agreed that the Freedmen parties of the second part, shall work dilligently, faithfully, and industriously in gathering the crop now on hand without regard to holidays (Sunday excepted) except such as the said Jas. M. Keeble (agent) party of the first part shall feel inclined to allow, and that shall perform and other duties as in the judgement of the said Jas. M. Keeble party of the first part the necessities of the said Trio plantation may require.

In the event that any of the undersigned Freedmen, parties of the second part, shall at any time  absent [[?]] himself from the premises of
