L.B. p 48-47 201 6 Miller Oscar Complaint to Col Brady by one Julia Miller who claims to be his lawful wife: to have him maintain his children & to prevent his marrying another woman. Oscar upon being examined states that he left Julia at Christmas 1865 and has not owned her for a wife since. Consequently their cohabitation is not legalized by the act of the Legislature approved March 10th 1866 7. Dec 8th Marianna V.S. Andrew her husband. Marianna complains that her husband has beaten an otherwise injured her. It appears that both are to blame and they wish to live apart, which course was recomended as they will undoubtedly become reconciled in a short time. 8 Jany 18th 1867 Harriet (Col) petitions for the release of six children which are bound to E W Brittle of Northampton Co Investigation shows that these children were properly bound at Dec term of over 27 Northampton Co Court. Harriet voluntarily relinquished her claim to the children and requested that the Court bind them to their illegitimate father. The Court refused to do this as he (Gustine their father) could not give the security required by law. Gustine then requested that they be apprenticed to E W Brittle, which was done. Case was dismissed, the Bureau having no authority to interfere. Reported Jany 24th 1867. 9 Jan'y 18th, 1867 John Bell (freedman) petitions for the release of his children which are apprenticed to John Bell Esq of Northampton Co NC. Investigation shows that these children were properly Indentured by Lt Penniman Agt of the Bureau for this Sub. District: the mother being dead and the father absent, no one knowing anything concerning his whereabouts. They were subsequently apprenticed by the Co Court. Case was Dismissed Reported Jan'y 24th 1867. 10 Apl 19th 1867 Eppes Nance and 27 others VS Dr W J Eppes Halifax County Claim for wages due under contract for the year 1866. Examination of the accounts showed that the sum of $834.00 was due the Plaintiffs This case was brought to my notice shortly after the close of the year. I did not deem it advisable at that time to force a Settlement as the Def't is bankrupt and had no property which could be seized the entire crop having been shipped. - as he stated - to get money to pay the hands. He assured me that they would be settled with & I have completed arrangements with his Agent for the speedy payment of all past claims. Reported April 26th 1867
