This Agreement made this 2nd day of January 1866, in duplicate, between Young G Houston of the first part and September West, a  freedman [[strikethrough]] freed [[/strikethrough]] of the second part, all of the County of Holmes and State of Mississippi. Witnesseth, that the part of the second part is to work for the party of the first part for the space of 12 months, beginning on the 1st day of January 1866, and ending on the 31st day of December 1866 as a common laborer on the farm of the said Houston and he is to obey all orders given by the said Houston or his manager on his the said Houston's farm, during said year of 1866

and the party of the first part in to pay the party of the second part one fourth part of the crop of cotton & corn grown on said farm by one hand during the year 1866 and furnish the party of the second part with good & sufficient food during said year and the said freedman is to clothe himself and pay his own doctor bills - but the said Houston is to attend said freedman in light sickness free of charge - said freedman is also to pay his own taxes.
