incumbrances And so that each hand or family may be paid in accordance to the labor performed by each considering drawback. 

The farm is to be kept in good repair and worked to the best advantage for its preservation; The said R.L. Caruthers furnishing lands teams and implements. In consideration of such labor & service required by said Freedmen they are to have the proceeds of one fourth (1/4) of all the cotton & corn made on said farm by their labor after the expenses of carrying on the farm such as Rope & bagging food & clothing & medicines are taken out of the whole amount of cotton made & sold. Everything used or consumed on the place as expenses such as corn meat and clothes that is replaced by like in kind shall be credited by amounts replaced and the surplus if any of such articles to be divided by the 1/4 for the benefit of labors. Tho' it will not be attempted to produce more than is consumed of such produce.

The division & apportionment of the part set aside for the hands is to be made by J.C. Caruthers and A. Waters in accordance with the rules of equity & justice whenever the proceeds of the cotton returned

To the foregoing contract & stipulations both parties bind themselves to conform in all respects. This the 1st day of June 1866
