These articles of agreement and contract made and concluded this 8th day of January 1866, by and between S. Lester Barksdale of the first part, and W. Perkins a freedman, of the second part, Witnesseth:  That for and in consideration of the payments hereinafter stated to be made, the said W. Perkins freedman agrees to and binds himself to work as a plantation laborer for said S.L.B. from the [[strikethrough]] 1st [[/strikethrough]] 8th day of January 1866, to the 1st day of January, 1867, on the plantation of said in Yazoo County, Mississippi. He agrees and binds himself said S.L.B. during said year (1866,)respectful, obedient and faithful labor, and to labor from [[strikethrough]] daylight [[/strikethrough]] sunrise until [[strikethrough]] dark [[/strikethrough]] after sunset of each day, under such plantation regulations as the said S.L.B., or his Agent, shall make.
In consideration of the faithful performance of this contract by the said Wm Perkins freedman, the said S.L.B., hereby obligates and binds himself to pay said Wm Perkins
the sum of $15.00 [[strikethrough]] per year [[/strikethrough]] per month, payable half yearly, 1st payment on 1st July 1866, and furnish him with 3 1/2 lbs of meat and one peck of meal per week with good and comfortable quarters and fuel and clothing as follows in march one shirt one pair pants of lowels & one pair shoes. In August the same except shoes. In November one coat one pair pants of jeans lowels shirt x one pair shoes.
The said S.L.B further agrees to keep constantly on hand meat, meal, and salt which he hereby binds himself to furnish said Wm Perkins in sufficient quantity, over and above his ration as stated,
at current market price.
 The said S.L.B., further agrees to require no labor of the said Wm Perkins from twelve M. Saturdays until the Mondays following, except attention to stock, and except further, that when work and labor may be deemed indispensable by the said S.L.B, to the successful cultivation and gathering of the crop, and when Wm Perkins shall be so required to labor on the afternoons of Saturdays as above stated, the said S.L.B. agrees to pay said Wm Perkins for such extra labor, or to allow said Wm Perkins an equal amount of time for his own use, out of laboring days when the situation and condition of crop and plantation will permit.
It is further agreed that in case the said W Perkins, shall absent himself without permission, or shall neglect or refuse to labor, as above stipulated, the said S.L.B. , or his Agent, reserves the right to discharge said Wm Perkins, from his employ and the said Wm Perkins shall forfeit all wages due him, by virtue hereof, at the time of discharge.
It is further understood and agreed that the said S.L.B. is to furnish all necessary medicines, and attention when sick to said Wm Perkins, but is not to be responsible for doctor's bills of said, Wm Perkins. It is further agreed that said Wm Perkins, is
