Agreement with Freedmen

This agreement made this 20th day of Nov. AD 1865 - by and between James Swearingen of the County of Lowndes and State of Mississippi of the first part and the persons hereafter named and undersigned Freedwomen & Freedmen of the County of Oktibbeha and state aforesaid of the second part.

Witnesseth that for the purpose of cultivating the plantation known as said Swearingen plantation in Lowndes County during the year 1866 from the first of January 1866 to first January 1867 The said James Swearingen party of the first part in consideration of promises and conditions hereinafter mentioned on the parties of the second part agrees to furnish to the [[strikethrough]] parties [[/strikethrough]] laborers of the second part and those rightfully dependant on them his said plantation, Gin, Screw, Mill and Thresher, Waggons & team shop and farming implements & other tools, also forage for the teams, and privilege to end hours for their use, water & fine wood raising poultry, but other stock prohibited expect a slop pig.
The parties of the second part as a foresaid promise and once to commence labor on or before the first Jan next that they will be respectful, sober and obedient, careful of the stock and implement with care and all other stock on the place will see that water & firewood is furnished will respect the directions of said Swearingen as to the general management of the farm as to when are where to plant
